JVC Archival Grade DVD-R

Recently, we have seen an increased demand to archive "digitized or analogue data" onto optical discs. Content such as "cultural heritage" in Europe, "official archives" in the U.S, make up a market that requires the archiving of important documents of government or general business which must not be altered or deleted.

At the same time, recording, writing and read-back errors are happening because there are so many low cost optical discs that do not satisfy basic requirements, and unfortunately users do not know which optical discs are suitable for long-term archiving for extremely important data.

We, Victor Advanced Media, take this demand seriously, and our Archival Grade DVD-R was developed to meet those critical requirements from the market. Archival Grade DVD-R incorporates all of the technology and know-how built from our 20 years of experience in the professional market. These products passed the ISO/IEC10995 test, the only international test standard that estimates the DVD-R archival life time.

Our commitment is to deliver "security" to all of the users that demand long-term archiving, while contributing to the further development of the archiving industry.

Our Archival Grade DVD-R passed ISO/IEC10995 test

Optical disc manufacturers, including us, have been claiming archival lifetime based on the result of testing performed without critical test details or important factors for "long time data retention" clearly stated. The ordinary test method is simple: to test discs in a high temperature and high humidity chamber and take the average of the result in each condition to estimate the archival lifetime.

However, ISO/IEC10995, which is only one standard in the world defining the test method for estimating DVD-R archival lifetime, is a highly reliable and strict method. First, the method takes fluctuations in disc quality into consideration, not simply taking an average. Secondly, the stress test breaks DVD-R in many different patterns, some of which unrelated to lifetime estimates. These patterns are eliminated from the test result and the method only focuses on "longevity".

Optical Disc Archive Test ISO/IEC 10995 13A4AXA3/ADTC Certification

Our Archival Grade DVD-R was tested by Archival Disc Test Center (ADTC). The test method complies to ISO/IEC10995. The analysis states the data can be retained safely for more than 30 years under a temperature of 25 degree Celsius and with 50% relative humidity.

Our Archival Grade DVD-R is fully tested by an independent test laboratory called ADTC-N in Japan. The test is conducted using the international standard ISO/IEC10995. The certified results for our products depict an archival life of more than 30 years. The logo is given to the products by ADTC to properly certify these results. All the users can choose the proper products for long term archiving by looking at the logo affixed to the products.

Low occurrence of initial writing errors

With long term archiving, the use of properly designed DVD-R and well-maintained drives to maintain a low initial writing error rate is important because discs with a high writing error rate could be easily impacted by external conditions such as temperature and humidity, which could trigger the risk of read back problems during the long term storage.

Essential disc parameters of our "Archival Grade DVD-R" are controlled at a higher level when compared to standard DVD-R. Furthermore, frequency of the inspection is approximately ten times greater in order to minimize the high error risks caused by DVD-R disc itself.

Technologies that support long term archiving

Archival lifetime could be affected by the storage capability of DVD-R. It goes without saying that rigorous specifications for the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the DVD-R are important, but the raw materials used for the DVD-R, such as reflective layer and organic dye, are also vital.

"Special Silver Alloy" is employed on the reflective layer

As you know, there are existing DVD-R discs that employ "gold" on the reflective layer. Its purpose is to minimize the degradation of the layer during long-term storage. However, generally speaking, reflectivity (an important parameter for writing process) on gold is lower than that of silver. Simply changing the material in that layer may cause an escalated writing error rate, which affects the lifetime of recorded discs. Additionally, JVC use silver based reflective layer because most of the drives in the market is designed with silver reflective layer discs and the best compatibility between these are secured.

DVD-R Stress Test

Our Archival Grade DVD-R employs a uniquely devel-oped "special alloy" on the silver based reflective layer to maintain suitable reflectivity so that long-term storage capability can coexist.

Morphology change of Ag/Ag alloy surface by heat treatment

"Uniquely Designed Organic Dye"

The design of the organic dye is also important for long-term archiving. Additives developed in-house are used for the organic dye for our archival grade DVD-R. This minimizes decomposition of the organic dye by heat or light during long-term storage.

JVC Hard Coat Technology provides extra protection

A special coating on the recording surface creates a hard coating and protects your important data from scratches, fingerprints, and dust.

Stability and consistency in each production lot

- Made Only In Japan -

Victor Advanced Media is the only manufacturer who can control all aspects of its manufacturing. Our Archival Grade DVD-R is manufactured, even after the acquisition of ISO certification, by exclusive production lines and quality standards are set at the highest level. Our commitment is to minimize the fluctuation of the products and to meet your strict storage needs.

Specially Tuned up Drives and Error Checker

  • Specially tuned-up drives provide the most suitable laser power for our "Archival Grade DVD-R", which minimize the occurrence of writing error.
  • Drives have a "Self Diagnostic Function". This function prevents drives from running under unfavorable conditions (Such as laser power deterioration, laser pick-up getting dirt/dust etc.) which minimizes the risk of high error rate because of drive issues.
  • Our user-friendly error checker analyzes the error rate without any complex operation. You can measure initial writing error rate immediately after writing or error rate during long-term storage for future migration purposes.
